The pandemic has accelerated shifts in the business world and the relationship between companies and employees.
According to Upwork’s seventh annual Freelance Forward study, 59 million Americans worked as freelance workers in the past 12 months, representing 36% of the overall U.S. workforce. This is an increase of 2 million freelance workers since 2019.
Upwork President and CEO Hayden Brown commented, “It’s not surprising freelancing is on the rise in this era of uncertainty.”
Remote work is another driver. “We expect this trend to continue as companies increasingly rely on freelancers as essential contributors to their own operations.”
